Hiddenite is the green, chromium- or vanadium-colored variety of spodumene, the same mineral family as kunzite. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and occurs in delicate to vivid yellow-green to emerald-green hues. With Mohs hardness 6.5–7 but perfect cleavage in two directions and sensitivity to heat and light, it is relatively fragile for jewelry and best suited to carefully worn pieces.

Value Drivers

Carat

Carat weight strongly affects value in fine hiddenite. Facetable crystals are uncommon, and clean stones above 2–3 carats with rich, green color are rare. Large, high-quality hiddenites can command significant premiums from collectors and connoisseurs.

Color

Color is the primary value factor. The most valuable hiddenite shows a vivid, medium to medium-dark green—sometimes with a slight yellowish component—approaching the look of emerald. Pale, washed-out or strongly yellow-green stones are less prized, though still collectible due to rarity.

Clarity

High transparency with minimal inclusions is important for fine hiddenite; however, internal fractures and zoning are common. Eye-clean stones with only minor inclusions are scarce, particularly in larger sizes. Prominent fractures lower both beauty and durability.

Cut

Cutting hiddenite is technically demanding because of cleavage and pleochroism. Well-cut stones orient the strongest green direction face-up while avoiding excessively deep or shallow proportions. Step and mixed cuts are common. Poor cutting can lead to lifeless stones or an increased risk of breakage during setting and wear.

Market Dynamics

Supply

Hiddenite was first discovered in North Carolina, USA, which gave the gem its name, but modern production is primarily from Afghanistan, Pakistan and other limited sources. Overall supply of facetable, rich-green hiddenite is very small compared with most mainstream colored stones.

Total global output of gem-quality hiddenite is likely in the low millions of carats or less, with transparent, strongly colored material for faceting forming a small fraction.Only a modest fraction of mined material appears as fine, finished gems; much remains as mineral specimens or low-grade cutting stock held by specialist dealers and collectors. in circulation
Demand

Demand is niche and concentrated among collectors and high-end colored-stone dealers who appreciate its rarity and color. Its fragility and limited supply restrict widespread use in mainstream jewelry, but it can attract strong interest when fine pieces appear on the market.

Recent Trends: niche but stable collector interest, with fine, well-documented stones achieving strong prices through specialist dealers and auctions.

Insights

Hiddenite was named after William Earl Hidden, who investigated the North Carolina deposit on behalf of Thomas Edison in the late 19th century.

Like kunzite, hiddenite can be pleochroic, displaying different color intensities along different crystallographic directions, which cutters must consider.

The stone can show some sensitivity to light and heat; prolonged exposure to strong sunlight may reduce color intensity in certain stones.

Because of its cleavage and brittleness, hiddenite should not be ultrasonically cleaned and must be protected from impact during setting and wear.

Some green spodumene on the market may be heat-treated or irradiated; natural-color hiddenite with documented provenance is particularly prized.

Fine hiddenite is rare enough that many jewelers and consumers have never encountered it, keeping it largely in the realm of specialist dealers.
