Lodolite

Carat weight is important because larger stones provide more visual space for complex internal 'scenes.' While quartz itself is common and large crystals exist, large lodolite gems with particularly striking, three-dimensional inclusions are much rarer and can be significantly more valuable than small, ordinary pieces.

Color arises from inclusions rather than the quartz itself. The most desirable lodolite features harmonious, vivid colors—such as greens, reds, oranges and whites—that form visually coherent patterns or 'miniature landscapes.' Dull, muddy or chaotic inclusions without aesthetic appeal are less valued.

Clarity in lodolite is paradoxical: desirable stones have a clear quartz host that allows unobstructed viewing of the inclusions, while the inclusions themselves provide the visual interest. Excessive cloudiness, fractures or haziness in the quartz diminishes the three-dimensional effect and reduces value.

Cutting lodolite focuses on orienting the 'scene' for maximum visual impact, often using high-domed cabochons or freeform shapes. A high-quality polish and strategic shaping to magnify interesting inclusions are critical. Poor orientation can obscure the best features or leave the stone looking confused rather than scenic.

Inclusion-bearing quartz occurs in many localities worldwide, with notable sources in Brazil and elsewhere. Quartz itself is abundant, but pieces with particularly attractive, well-composed inclusions suitable for high-end 'garden quartz' are less common.

Demand is driven by collectors, crystal enthusiasts and artisan jewelers who value each stone's uniqueness. Lodolite occupies a niche within the broader quartz market, often sold as one-of-a-kind pieces.

Recent Trends: niche but stable collector interest, with fine, well-documented stones achieving strong prices through specialist dealers and auctions.
