Nephrite is a calcium magnesium amphibole (actinolite–tremolite series) and one of the two true jade minerals, the other being jadeite. It typically appears in shades of green—from creamy, light 'mutton fat' white-green through medium spinach-green to dark green—and can also be brown, gray or black. Nephrite is exceptionally tough due to its densely interlocking fibrous structure, with Mohs hardness around 6–6.5, making it ideal for carvings, beads and bangles.

Value Drivers

Carat

Carat weight is less central than overall size and craftsmanship, but large, thick bangles, carvings or cabochons with fine, even color and texture are significantly more valuable than small or thin pieces. Nephrite is abundant in large blocks, but high-quality, flaw-free material of substantial size is less common.

Color

Color is a primary driver. The most highly valued nephrite shows rich, even spinach-green or creamy white 'mutton fat' tones with good translucency. Uneven color, extensive dark patches, or dull grayish/brown hues reduce desirability, though darker tones are still used for traditional and modern designs.

Clarity

In nephrite, clarity is expressed as texture and translucency. Fine-grain, compact material with good translucency and minimal visible fractures or discolorations is prized. Coarse-grain, opaque or heavily included stone is common and used for lower-end carvings and beads.

Cut

Nephrite is typically carved or cut into cabochons, beads and bangles. Craftsmanship plays a major role in value: intricate, well-executed carving, harmonious proportions and a high polish dramatically enhance worth. Poorly carved or dull pieces, even in good material, are less valuable.

Market Dynamics

Supply

Nephrite deposits are widespread, with major sources in China (historically Hetian/Hotan), British Columbia (Canada), Russia, New Zealand and elsewhere. Overall nephrite supply is large, supporting extensive use in carvings and jewelry. However, the supply of fine, translucent, evenly colored nephrite is more limited and concentrated in select deposits.

Nephrite resources collectively amount to hundreds of millions of carats across all qualities, with ongoing mining in several regions feeding both local and international markets.A high proportion of production is cut into calibrated stones, beads or carvings and actively traded through jewelry manufacturers, wholesalers and online retailers. in circulation
Demand

Demand is strong in East Asian markets, where nephrite has a long history in art and ornament, and in global markets for carvings and beads. Nephrite continues to be used in both traditional cultural pieces and contemporary designs, often alongside or in place of jadeite.

Recent Trends: steady demand from the broader jewelry market, with gradual growth in online and designer channels for well-cut, natural stones.

Insights

Nephrite was for centuries the primary jade of Chinese culture before jadeite became more prominent in later periods.

New Zealand ‘pounamu' (greenstone) is a culturally important nephrite used by Māori for tools, weapons and jewelry.

Because of its toughness, nephrite has historically been carved into tools and ceremonial objects that would have shattered if made from more brittle stones.

Nephrite is generally less expensive per carat than top jadeite, but fine white and green nephrite can still command notable prices, especially in well-carved pieces.

The term 'jade' can refer to either nephrite or jadeite in trade, so gemological testing is important when precise identification matters for valuation.

Treatments such as waxing and surface impregnation are sometimes used to improve polish and appearance, especially in lower-grade material.
